What is Reconstructive Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in treating patients with acquired defects of the jaws following ablative tumour surgery or trauma to the oral and facial region. These procedures are required in case of:

  • Ablative tumor surgery (benign or malignant) and traumatic injuries (especially avulsive) commonly demand reconstructive procedures to restore the functional and cosmetic deficit.
  • Loss of soft or hard tissue secondary to infectious processes (e.g. osteomyelitis), or tissue injury due to radiation (e.g. osteoradionecrosis) may also require reconstructive measures.
  • The decrease in quantity and quality of maxillo-mandibular structures with age (that may be accelerated by other processes such as early teeth loss), can be addressed with reconstructive measures to augment the tissue for restoration using dental implants.

Without reconstructive surgery patients’ life quality, can be severely affected, from having speaking and eating problems to dealing with insecurities due to the issues related to facial aesthetic. Our Maxillofacial reconstructive procedures include:

  1. Advanced bone grafting procedures for a variety of circumstances such as sinus lift procedures, mandibular augmentation/reconstruction, dental implants, socket preservation, nerve repositioning or ridge expansion
  2. Transfer of tissue to reconstruct large soft and/or hard tissue defects by using microvascular free flap techniques (e.g. transplantation of bone with blood vess, radial forearm fasciocutaneous or fibula osteocutaneous free flaps).

I any of the above situations, your surgeon will perform a complete medical history and physical examination before the surgery. Your doctor will give you all the information required about the procedure & instructions on what you should do before and after the reconstructive surgery for a pain-free and comfortable experience. Reconstructive surgery is always done under anaesthesia and you can rest assured that there will be an anesthesiologist to monitor the anesthesia, during the procedure and your recovery.

The recovery time can vary from a few weeks to month and this will depend on the complexity of the reconstructive surgery. It is also expected to feel some discomfort and swelling after the surgery, however your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to ease the discomfort. Our patients’ comfort and safety are top priorities at Georgia Oral & Facial Reconstructive Surgery, and our surgeons will be happy to answer any questions you have during your treatment time.
